Phonics Outcomes

Phonics Outcomes in 2023

Phonics: The Phonics Screening is a check of pupil’s phonic knowledge. It is administered in June in Year 1 and monitors the percentage of pupils who have achieved the threshold standard - the expected progress.

Pupils who do not meet the standard in Year 1 re-take the Phonics Screening Check in Year 2.

The threshold standard for expected progress in 2023 was 32 out of 40 marks.

Since 2012 we have made significant improvements in our phonics standards overtime. Since 2015 there was an ongoing upward trend and the school closed the gap with National year on year and in 2018 was above National, a real huge achievement for us.

In 2019 and 2022 there was a decrease and we were below National. There was no phonics data for 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID- 19 pandemic. The Year 2 cohort in 2020/21, 84% of pupils achieved the phonics standard. In 2023 phonics was identified as a key school improvement priority area and as a result we are above National and are very proud of our pupil’s attainment.

Phonics was identified as an Ofsted priority in January 2015. ‘Raise standards in Year 1 Phonics’.  The school has rigorously made improvements to our phonics outcomes and phonics learning for our pupils. Phonics remains a whole school focus and a huge school priority to continue to improve standards and outcomes for all our pupils in 2024.
