Proposed Change to the School Week, from September 2021

Wednesday 16 June 2021

Update on the proposal for Friday afternoons from September 2021

Dear Parent/Carer,

Following the parent consultation on the proposed change to the school week, we write to inform you that the school week WILL NOT be changing from September 2021.

The school have carefully considered the responses received and, although the benefits of the change are still valid, we have decided not to proceed with this change from September 2021.

The purpose of a consultation period is to gather parental opinions on a proposal. We received 108 responses to the proposal from Year R and Year 1 parents, as well as responses from the parents of the new intake joining us in September. Although many of the responses were in agreement with the proposal, we have thought carefully about the written responses and the potential issues identified that some families may be faced with as a result of this change.

One of the key issues raised was around concerns about the recent lockdowns and school closures that have happened over the past 18 months. Whilst the school can see the benefit of the proposal whereby children would be taught for a greater proportion of their time in school by their class teacher, we have given careful consideration to this issue and understand that some parents may be concerned about their child being in school for less time, given the current situation.

As the consultation document stated, this proposal was made in the best interests of your child. However, some of the feedback received indicates that it is not the right time to move forward with this change. A minority of parents expressed that they felt this proposal was not made in the best interest of the children and the school care more about the teachers than the children. We would like to take this opportunity to, once again, reiterate that every decision the school makes is in the best educational interests of your child. However, as previously stated, the purpose of a consultation is to gather parental opinions and act on the feedback received. Therefore, the school will not be proceeding with this change due to the feedback gathered during the consultation period at this time. We still strongly believe that there are great benefits to the proposal and this may be revisited in the future.

We would like to take the opportunity to thank parents who responded to the consultation on the proposed change to the school week. Your opinions and feedback are very important to us and we appreciate the time you have taken to read and consider the proposal.
