If your child is off sick or sent home with any one of the main symptoms of Covid-19 (new continuous cough, high temperature of 37.8ºc or above or loss/change of taste or smell), you will be asked to get a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test for them.
The school will only accept a negative result from a PCR test as proof that your child does not have the virus. If you show a negative result from a rapid lateral flow test you will be asked to get your child tested again with a PCR test.

A PCR test is easy to book online, and there are four different test centre locations in Luton alone. These are:
You do need to book this test before you arrive, as they will give you a time slot to attend.
Alternatively you can request a PCR home test to be posted out to you, but this does take slightly longer.
You should normally receive the result within 24-36 hours of taking the test if you attend one of the four centres listed above.
The rapid lateral flow tests that are also available are designed for twice weekly testing on people that are not showing any symptoms (asymptomatic) of Covid-19. About 1 in 3 people with COVID-19 do not have symptoms but can still infect others. You should do a rapid test twice a week (every 3 to 4 days) to check if you have the virus. If people test positive and self-isolate, it helps stop the virus spreading.
